GOD, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR ME?
In the introduction to this devotional, we discussed seeking to be less informed and more so to be formed by God. This is a heart that seeks to be near to the Lord, always hungry to learn more about the Lord, and that is satisfied simply in His presence. Our flesh wants the what, when, where, why, and how of God’s plans, but scripture consistently teaches us to always begin with the WHO.
We need to first answer the question “Who is God to me?” before asking “What does He want me to do?”
Read Matthew 16:13-19
Peter had spent a good deal of time with Jesus before being asked by Him, “Who do you say that I am?” After all Peter had seen and heard, he was sure how to answer that question: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.”
We, too, must spend time with Jesus to know who Jesus is. Peter was physically in Jesus’ presence. We don’t have that opportunity yet, but through the Word of God and Holy Spirit, we can be just as certain about who Jesus is. After spending time with Him in His Word, His people, and in His House, Jesus’ hope is for us to declare Him as the Messiah, the anointed One, to deliver us from our sin, and the Son of the living God.
Now that Peter has a full complete and understanding of who Jesus is, he is ready to know the purpose for his life. Peter likely didn’t get as many details as he’d like, but he had the two most important questions about the plan for his life answered: “Who is Jesus,” and “What is Jesus’ purpose for his life?”
This is where we too must start seeking God’s plans for our lives. Although it is so tempting to want the steps, specifics, and information, God says to begin with the seeking and searching for who He is: the formation. As we form our understanding of who God is, the knowledge of what God has for us will come in His perfect timing and ways.
What information have you been asking God to reveal?
What is the Lord revealing to you about Who He is?
