“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
Colossians 3:23-24
Observation
In the verses leading to this passage, Paul is writing to the church in Colossae about our new identity that is found in Jesus, including humility, compassion, patience, and forgiveness. This passage gives a a breakdown of how this new identity is to play out in relationships with those around us: our spouse, our kids, and our workplace. Each of these instructions come down to love, which is making the choice to honor and serve the other people in our life above seeking our own advancement or preferences. It's a daily choice that we make, rather than grand gestures we make occasionally. This can only come out of on overflow of a new identity in Jesus.
Application
As we reflect on this passage, ask yourself this question: Would the people in my life who know me best say I am living out of my new identity in Jesus? Think about your daily life. Am I consistently serving and honoring my spouse? Am I parenting my kids in a way that points them back to the value they have in Jesus, even in difficult moments? At work, am I only doing things for the approval of other people, or am I working well because I want to honor the Lord above anything else? Share one action step that you want to take this week to live out your new identity in Christ through your closest relationships, and make a plan for how that thing can happen.
Prayer
Father, thank you for the new identity I have in Jesus. Help me to live it out every day in the way that I honor, serve, and love those around me because I want to honor you above anything else. Thank you for your strength that is perfect in the moments where I feel weak. As I learn to walk this out, help me remember that you are with me. Let the relationships in my life reflect the love that you have for me and for everyone else in my life. In Jesus Name, Amen.
