Scripture

"Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence."

Colossians 2:20-23

Observation

Paul is writing to Christians in Colossae who were being pressured by false teachers. These teachers were mixing faith in Jesus with extra religious requirements. The main issue was this: false teachers were adding man-made rules and requirements to the simple Gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul pushes back by saying: “Don’t trade a relationship with Jesus for a checklist about Jesus.” Some people believed that if they followed enough rules, avoided enough things, or practiced extreme self-discipline, they could become more spiritual. But Paul says outward behavior alone cannot change the heart. Rules can train you and might be beneficial at first, but only Jesus can transform you. Religious practices point us to Jesus they are not a replacement for Jesus.

Application

Christianity is not about proving ourselves to God, it’s about living from an overflow of gratitude for what Jesus has already done for us. Spiritual habits don’t earn God’s love; they help us experience the love we already have in Christ. It’s about staying connected to Him and allowing Him to change us from the inside out. How do we maintain a healthy motive and mindset when practicing spiritual disciplines like prayer, personal bible study, church attendance, purity, etc? In your own words, what does a healthy motive and mindset look like when engaging in "religious practices?"

Prayer

Jesus, thank you that my faith is not built on my ability to be perfect, but on what You have already done for me. Help me never replace a real relationship with You with empty religious habits or a checklist of rules. Teach me to follow You from a place of love, not pressure. Let my obedience come from gratitude, not from trying to prove myself. Keep my heart connected to You because You are the source of true transformation. Amen.
