Scripture

"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead."

Colossians 2:9-12

Observation

Paul makes it abundantly clear that Jesus is stronger and better than anything else we could root our lives in. He has surpassed and triumphed over all powers, authorities, sins, spiritual forces, and even death itself! Those who depend on Jesus lack nothing, because he has power over everything.

Application

Paul says that “in Christ you have been brought to fullness,” meaning there is not a need in your lives that Jesus can’t fill. How “full” do you feel in this season of your life? What things have you sought fullness in that are outside of Jesus? It could be recreation, material things, or even another person. Whatever they might be, bring those things to Jesus in prayer today and ask that he would help you depend on him for everything.

Prayer

God, thank you for forgiving my sins and raising me to new life with you. I know that you have power over all things, so I commit to staying rooted and built up in you rather than anything else. Show me the things I’ve looked to for fullness instead of you, and help me to depend on you for everything I need. Amen.
