Scripture

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.” Colossians 1:3

Observation

Paul begins this passage by showing us an important step in prayer: thanking God for His people. Whether we are praying through frustration, conflict, or simply lifting someone up in prayer, gratitude should come first. When we thank God for people, it helps us see them the way God sees them and changes the way we approach and treat them.

Application

Before praying about someone’s flaws, needs, or conflicts, take a moment to thank God for them first. Gratitude shifts our perspective and softens our hearts toward others.   Who is someone I need to start thanking God for more often? How would my relationships change if I prayed with gratitude before frustration? Am I seeing people through my feelings or through God’s perspective?

Prayer

God, help me to pray prayers of gratefulness for the people you have created in Your image. Allow me to see people the way that you see them and to treat them the way you treat them. Amen.
