Scripture

“The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but if the Lord is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all his wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt?’ But now the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”  The Lord answered, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive.”

Observation

Our identity must come before our activity. This moment with God was a test of Gideon’s identity. If he believed in what God said about him, he could lead his people to victory. If he did not, he had already lost the battle before it started. Which voice would he listen to?

Application

God has a calling on us all: to be a friend that shares the Gospel with others, a coworker who is a light in the darkness, a mom that disciples her kids as the grow, a volunteer that models their leadership after Jesus. Every role in our life comes with a calling from God; this is our activity. But no matter how impactful, important, or meaningful our calling is, our identity precedes it. Our identity is the foundation we stand on. So, what do you believe about yourself? Which voice are you listening to? If our identity is founded on any other voice other than God’s voice, we will, like Gideon, lose the ability to do what God has called us to do. Is there something that you/your family could quote daily to remind yourselves of your identity?

Prayer

God, thank you for creating us. You made us in your image and because of that, we can do anything you call us to do. Help us to listen to your voice today, over any other voice. Our minds are a place for you and us alone. The enemy’s voice does not belong there. Let us be a light today and shine brightly because we know who we are in you. Amen.
