Scripture

“Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.”

1st Peter 1:10-12

Observation

The prophets in the Old Testament were given glimpses of a salvation and grace that was still to come through Jesus. They searched intently to understand what God was revealing, even though they would not live to see the fulfillment of those promises. Yet they remained faithful to speak what God had given them.

Peter points out that they came to understand something significant: they were not serving themselves, but those who would come after them. Their obedience was part of a much bigger story than their own lives. They may not have seen the outcome, but they faithfully played their part, trusting that God would use their obedience to accomplish His purposes. Ultimately, their message was pointing to Jesus, the One we now know has come.

Application

God invites each of us to play a part in a story that is bigger than our own. We may not always understand what God is doing, how it will work out, or whether we will ever see the fruit of our obedience. But our responsibility is not to see the whole picture. It is to faithfully take the next step God is asking us to take.

My job is obedience. God’s job is the outcome.

The prophets faithfully carried a message they would never see fulfilled, trusting that God would use their obedience for generations to come. In the same way, our obedience today may impact people we will never meet and produce fruit we may never see. That does not make our obedience insignificant. It makes it part of something much bigger than us.

Prayer

Father, thank you for the gift of grace through Jesus. Thank you that I am living in the fruit of other’s obedience. Help me be faithful to what You are asking me to do, even when it does not make sense. Remind me that my job is obedience and the outcome is Yours. I trust You with the results. Help me live for You, knowing that You will use my obedience for Your glory. Thank you for who you are. In Jesus’ name, amen.
