Week 1 - Focus on God | Day 3 - God is Our Father

SCRIPTURE - Psalm 103:13

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;

OBSERVATION

The Old Testament King David writes this in the Psalms, a book full of praise and worship to God. David had several reckless children that he dearly loved and cared for despite the wrongs they had done. He compares this compassion to the love of God for us. 

David himself knew this love; he had been reckless when he knew better, making selfish, destructive, and thoughtless choices. But still, God showed David care and love because He knew David's heart was to honor God.

APPLICATION

In this first week of the fast, as we turn our focus to God and remember who He is, we are reminded by the Bible that God is our Father.

When a good dad looks at his kid, his heart softens. He can't help but smile. A deep, profound love exists for his son or daughter years before they can give anything back to him. It's a pure, simple love. Because that's what good dads do. When we give our lives to God, He becomes our Father.

Many times, our relationship with our earthly father impacts the way we view and connect with God. But God is not the reflection of our earthly fathers. God is the perfection of them. Everything good about your dad, God is. Everything your dad lacked, God is. Let God fill in the gaps where your father figures fall short.  

PRAYER

Today, give yourself the space to recognize God as your perfect, present, patient, loving, and holy Father. Receive the compassion and love He so desperately desires to extend to you. Thank Him for His love, and allow yourself the room to receive it in your own heart and soul.

"God, thank you for being my perfect Father. Thank you for the love you have for me. That you see me, know me, and understand me and what I need. Help me to experience your love for me in new ways today, In Jesus' name, amen."
