Week 2 - Hearing from God | Day 14 - How Do I Keep Growing?

SCRIPTURE - 2 Peter 1:5-9

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.

OBSERVATION

In this passage, Peter gives us a list of qualities that Jesus’ followers should seek to add to our lives if we want to stay effective and productive for Christ: faith, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, and love. Who wouldn’t want these traits?

But it’s not just about having them - it’s about having them in “increasing measure,” meaning they should grow in us over time. Peter says that if we lack these qualities, it’s as if we’ve forgotten what Jesus did to forgive us of our sins!

APPLICATION

As followers of Jesus, growth is our calling. But it’s not just something we do - it’s what God calls us to. We should always aim to look more and more like Jesus (like the list of traits Peter describes). While perfection isn’t the goal, progress is. If we ever find ourselves stalling in growth or seriously lacking in these traits, it’s worth asking: have we forgotten what Jesus gave to forgive us?

When we remember Jesus and His sacrifice, we’re compelled to thank Him through the service of our lives. And that service leads to growth in these areas. God isn’t looking for us to prove we’re worthy by demonstrating growth - He’s inviting us to experience growth as a natural result of falling deeper in love with Jesus.

PRAYER

Where do you need to grow? In your love and compassion for others? In your faith and trust in God? In your knowledge of His Word? The more you focus on Jesus’ sacrifice for you, the more you’ll find yourself naturally growing in these areas.

“God, thank you for the gift of your Son. Help me to remember His gift of forgiveness always. I want to be effective for you. Would you show me today where you want me to grow? (Pause to listen.) Show me how I can take steps to grow in the way you’re calling me to. In Jesus' name, amen.”

Lord, here I am; send me. Teach me Your ways, give me Your presence, show me Your glory! Highlight areas in my life where I need to grow, You’ve already given me the tools that I need. May I use them each day to succeed in growing more and more into the calling You have placed on my life. May I walk in obedience, humility, unwavering faith and complete trust in all I am to do for Your kingdom Lord. You must become greater, I must become less. Thank You for Your strength today and in the days to come. I love You Jesus!

Thank you Jesus for Your forgiveness. I ask You, where do You want me to grow. Where do I need to grow. I pray I am a light to others to help them come to you oh Lord! Thank You Jesus!
