The Heiskell Family's Story

In 2015, my husband and I began to feel God's tug on our heart for foster care. We had missed the service announcing that it was going to be Orphan Sunday the next week, and we walked into the concourse completely unaware of what God was about to do.

That morning, We began talking with some friends that were hosts before service started. Somehow, we got into a conversation about how we were wanting to foster but were terrified. “What about our biological children? What kind of negative impact could it have on them?” Then, they shared their stories of adoption. We had no clue they had fostered prior to our conversation. The gentleman said, “I don’t know anything about it but there’s a sign over there that says Foster Orientation. You might want to ask about it.”

We attended, asked a million questions, and still felt unsure if we could ever do something so big. We couldn’t get away from the way God orchestrated everything that day. We went to the next meeting, and the next, and began the classes still unsure. We got licensed and even got our first call… but we couldn’t and said no. The next week, we couldn’t shake the feeling that we needed to say yes to God's calling. We got a call the next day and said yes! That was 6 years ago. We have now had the honor to love 10 kids through those years and also helped facilitate homes for babies that went straight into adoption with their adoptive parents.

Each day, I’m thankful God gave us the courage to say yes.

Fostering isn’t always easy, but it’s a blessing in so many ways and I will never regret saying yes to this journey.
